Jeff alikulia nyuma na familia yake katika Pasifiki Kaskazini Magharibi. Ilikuwa mbali na backpacking ultralight, lakini kupakia hadi paundi 50 kila mmoja na kutembea maili 3 kwa ziwa kwa samaki na kambi kwa ajili ya mwishoni mwa wiki. Akiwa na umri wa miaka 2 Jeff alipata giardia kwenye moja ya safari hizi, na kwa mwingine alikuwa na mbu wengi sana wanaoumwa mchana walidhani alikuwa na kuku.

Backpacking akaenda haki pamoja na uvuvi, kujenga rafts logi, na kukamata crawdads. thru-hike ya kwanza ilikuwa wakati Jeff alikuwa 20 kwenye PCT, na tangu amekwenda kuweka rekodi za kasi za 16 na kuongezeka zaidi ya maili 30k.
