With the help of Sawyer filters, Fiji has become one of the first nations with a border to border clean water solution and save rural families over $600 per year (2019).
Initially, 50% of Fijians did not have access to a treated water supply, and instead relied on contaminated wells or rivers shared with animals and wildlife for their water.
GIS (geographic information system) software is currently tracking the implementation of 25,000 Sawyer filters and the results for the following will be submitted for publication in journals and be featured in clean water conferences around the world:
The Sawyer water filter is a long-term solution. As part of the process, there is follow-up with families multiple times to track outcomes with data and provide continuing education.
99.3% of filters work properly on follow-up.
Prior to installations in Fiji, households reported 23.5% of households reported health issues prior to filter installation and consequently lost on average 1.4 days of work each month.
Only 0.8% of households reported health issues after filter use. Financial benefits included an average of $16 USD savings monthly in health costs after filter installation, in addition to working an 1.4 extra days per month. Households also saved an average of $11 USD per month on purchased water.

The QR code printed on our filters brings users to our website's help page, where they can select one of the ten available languages. When in-person demonstrations and training are impossible, users are able to learn everything they need to know about their filter at the point of use.
The QR codes can also be scanned into GIS survey software for monitoring and evaluation of the filters. This replaces the bar codes that were previously used.
