“Let's understand ticks first, so we can remove the panic."

- Kurt Avery, Sawyer Founder and CEO

Ticks can feel scary, but education is the best protection. Learn about ticks, tick prevention, tick removal, and other tick tips below.

Understanding Ticks

Slow Feeders: It takes anywhere from 8 to 24 hours before a tick exchanges enough fluids with you to pass along a disease, so early detection matters. Depending on the species, ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Alpha-Gal Syndrome, and many others.

Slow Breathers: Ticks only breathe once every 15 minutes. That means we have time to deal with them. It also means that you may find ticks crawling on permethrin-treated fabric or fur, but they may not have taken a breath yet to begin the dying process.

Ticks Senses: Ticks detect body heat and breathing, so layered protection is key. They also like to crawl upwards, both inside and outside of clothing, but can also drop from above onto people passing below branches, trees, or other overhanging vegetation.

Seasonal Activity and Range: Ticks are generally active when temperatures are above freezing. Peak season is spring through fall, though in warmer regions they may be active all year-round. While different tick species spread different diseases and risk varies by region, ticks have been found on every continent including Antarctica.

Rodent Hosts: Deer, mice, and small rodents drive tick populations. Increased development of previously wooded areas reduces the population of natural predators, resulting in an increase of rodent populations. A single mouse can host over 100 ticks.

Prevention and Protection

Use a Topical Repellent - In hot weather, apply topical repellents to exposed skin. Sawyer’s Picaridin formula is recommended for ticks and mosquitoes, and its family-friendly formula is guaranteed to provide all day protection.

Treat Clothes and Gear - A University of Rhode Island study (2011) found that people wearing Permethrin-treated shoes and socks were 73.6 times less likely to have a tick bite than those wearing untreated footwear. Permethrin spray bonds to fabric fibers for up to 6 weeks of UV exposure, or 6 washings in a washing machine - whichever comes first.

Choose Clothes Wisely - Wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks more easily. Tuck pants into socks and wear long sleeves when possible to reduce entry points.

Tick Check! After going outdoors, get in the habit of performing a full-body check. Pay special attention to the areas around the knees, armpits, groin, scalp, and waistline. Shower soon after being outdoors to help wash away ticks before they attach.

How to Safely Remove Ticks

1. Stay Calm: Because of their slow metabolism, there is no need to panic or hurry.

2. No Home Remedies: Avoid vaselines, matches, or chemicals to promote a “voluntary” exit. To loosen and release their mouthpiece, ticks release more fluid into you.

3. The Right Method: With tweezers or a tick-removal tool, grasp close to the skin under the body of the tick. Lift the tick SLOWLY, do not twist or jerk, this helps remove the tick without breaking off its mouthparts.

4. Clean Bite the Site: Clean the area with an alcohol pad or antiseptic wipes.

5. When to see a Doctor: If you think the tick was embedded for a long period of time and you notice flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention. If possible, bring the tick in a sealed container for identification.

Other Tick Tips

For Pets: Check pets for thoroughly for ticks after being outdoors. Treat your pup with Permethrin for flea and tick prevention - it only takes a tick crawling across one inch of treated fabric or fur to begin the dying process, which means less hitchhikers into your home.

For Hunters: As your
game animal cools, hundreds of ticks may drop off. Over 300,000 ticks were once recorded on a single moose! Lining your truck bed with a Permethrin-treated blanket or canvas ensures ticks die in transit instead of hitching a ride home.

For Yard Control: Place Permethrin-treated cotton balls around your yard. Mice take them to their nest, killing ticks where they are bred.

For Campers & Hikers: When sitting on the ground in a tick area, sit on a Permethrin-treated blanket or a treated bed net that adds virtually no weight to your pack.
